Dawn Laundrup was engineered for dependability, and her fine craftmanship allows for carefree maintenance. Her exclusive features fit any budget. Once you have indulged yourself and experienced the pleasures of her world, you can compare your life to hers and heave a sigh of relief that experiencing it second-hand was easier and more comfortable than how she did it.

Having lived an entire life by age 12 and curated an impressive collection of anecdotes, she views every day after that as icing on the cake. She believes that every heartbreak or dark night of the soul produces moments of utter hilarity, and that’s what keeps her going. She accepts your thanks for serving her country as a member of the Air Force and will tell you it was her pleasure to do so. She would do it again at the drop of a hat but needs to let those less experienced have fun with it now.

I have been cultivating rudeness for many years; you see, I had been bred to be polite and obedient. This training, I fear, is contrary to my nature, which is both naïve and skeptical, and it required a good many rounds of beating and public humiliation before it began to “take.” Sarcasm is my form of civil disobedience, and even then, I have found it better to keep my words in my head and remain with my mouth closed. Better safe than sorry is the maxim I run through my head at opportune moments when I could have launched a well-timed zinger. Asking questions to authority was strictly discouraged. I was taught blind obedience as a child, especially as an adolescent, when my training was accelerated. Dad was the itinerant drill sergeant, and Mom was the enforcer.

About

The Book

Daddy was a soldier by choice and a father by accident; our family “Followed the Drum, “meaning his wife and kids went with him as he served his country in the Air Force. We regularly packed up our household goods and pets, said goodbye to our friends and grandparents, and traveled long distances by car or airplane. We never knew what to expect once we arrived, but the base would ensure we had a place to sleep each night and services available to help a migrating family. New schools, languages, exotic cultures, and rich opportunities to learn about people and the world awaited us. The downside was the risk of war, loss of life and limb, and the stress that accompanies a family constantly in transition. I couldn’t imagine my life any other way.

So many of the children of active-duty military personnel have experienced the challenges of having a father or mother who serves disappear for periods to places they may or may not be aware of to “work” without knowing exactly what they do. Are they an airplane mechanic like my dad, or a pilot? Do they work as a nurse or doctor at the Base Service Store or the hospital, or is it even high-level secret squirrel stuff? No matter what they do, they are not only choosing to pursue their life of service, but their families are involved too, and the children have not had any choice in this matter, they are caught up in the decisions of their parents. This can sweep them to the far sides of the world into adventure, opportunity, and possibly grave danger.
